ISO 45001: Reception at Community Level

Five years after its international publication and adoption at a national level, CEN adopts the ISO 45001 standard on occupational health and safety management systems. This information comes from INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Workplace Accidents) through a note on 13/10, following the communication from UNI (Italian Standardization Body) on 10/10.

The standard becomes UNI EN ISO 45001:2023 ‘Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems – Requirements and Guidance for Use,’ but remains identical in content to the international standard ISO 45001:2018, which was already adopted as a national standard on March 12, 2018.

EN ISO 45001 serves as a valuable tool for preventing workplace accidents and occupational illnesses, offering a systematic and proactive approach to managing health and safety at work.

The adoption of this standard within the European Union aims to provide cohesive guidance and shared practices to enhance worker conditions and mitigate risks within workplaces.

Why is it important to adopt this standard?

Organizations aligning with this standard showcase a tangible commitment to employee safety and well-being.

EN ISO 45001 mandates

  • thorough risk assessments,
  • the implementation of actionable plans,
  • the adoption of effective monitoring systems to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Moreover, this standard encourages active employee involvement in decision-making processes concerning workplace safety, fostering a participative and aware organizational culture.

It emphasizes the significance of ongoing employee training and open communication regarding health and safety matters.

The adoption of EN ISO 45001 has brought numerous benefits to European enterprises, enhancing risk management, reducing workplace incidents, and contributing to overall business efficiency.

In conclusion

The incorporation of ISO 45001 at the European level marks a significant step towards promoting uniform standards and secure work practices.

This adoption affirms Europe’s commitment to ensuring better and safer working conditions for all employees.

The standard has been available on the UNI website since October 10, 2023.
