What is really audit and what does auditor do?

It is essential to know the concept of “audit” to fully understand the figure of the auditor and his/her tasks.

WHAT DOES “AUDIT” MEAN?

The expression audit indicates a set of activities related to business management system control.

UNI EN 19001: 2018 “Guidelines for auditing management system” defines audit as “systematic, independent and documented process for obtaining objective evidence and evaluating it objectively to determine the extent to which the audit criteria are fulfilled”.

Corporate audit refers to procedures that guarantee that internal management processes function effectively.

In practical terms, audit consists of a series of activities, the aim of which is to identify aspects of company procedures that don’t work or need adjustment.

Depending on the scope, it is possible to distinguish various types of audit:

  • Conformity audits: related to legal aspect of company as policy and regulations.
  • Management audits: related to controls carried out on business process efficiency.

WHAT DOES AUDITOR DO?

Returning to definition in aforementioned ISO 19001, “an auditor is person who conducts an audit“.

He/she plays a role of high responsibility since the auditing activity concerns both accounting and administrative aspects.

Auditor checks that internal procedures are respected and correctly applied.

Therefore, auditor is a key figure inside a company.
