The DOP Economy is the segment of food with Geographical Indication (GI) branded Made in Italy, which accounts for a fifth of national agri-food value.

After 2020, marked by pandemic, during which the sector has however shown a good seal, in 2021 the DOP food and wine sector achieves an increase of 16% year-on-year.

IS DOP ECONOMY A RECORD?

It can be said that DOP Economy saw a veritable record when it has established itself as 21% of contribution to total sales of agri-food sector, thanks to the collaboration of all agri-food comparts throughtout the country. Even on exportation, an important record was set for DOP ECONOMY sector, which currently achieves about 10,7 billion euro for a weight equal to 21% of all agri-food export.

In particular, food and wine are the main pillars of DOP Economy.
Especially wine has recorded an increase of DOP PGI trademark registration in recent years.

HOW DOES DOP ECONOMY CHANGE FROM NORTH TO SOUTH?

Regarding the economic impacts of DOP PGI supply chains, 2021 has experienced a growth for 18 regions out 20, and more than half of the cases mark double-digit percentage change.

The four North-East regions confirm their role as economic driving force, exceeding for the first time 10 billion overall.

North-West and Center also grew by respectively +10,8% and +15,5%.

The figure for South and Islands is particularly significant, single area in growth in 2020 (+7,5%), in 2021 brings an additional +13,2%.
