The DOP ECONOMY is the segment of the food sector of geographical indication (GI), branded made in Italy, which represents about one-fifth of the value of the entire agri-food sector.
The whole DOP ECONOMY is driven by wine production that confirms, from year to year, its central role in the global positioning.
To this date, it reaches 16,6 billion euro, that is 19% of Italian agro-food revenue.
HOW DID DOP ECONOMY PRODUCTS CHANGE POST 2020?
As is well known, world economy has slowed down in 2020 due to the Covid 19 pandemic.
Despite the context, PGI and DOP products confirmed themselves, also in 2020, as an important part of made in Italy establishement in international field.
The latest ISMEA-QUALIVITA report proves this: thanks to the traditions of our country, Italian DOP Economy holds court within the international context.
DOP ECONOMY: NORTH VS SOUTH
Italy takes part, in a unified manner, in the DOP ECONOMY richness, because both northern and southern regions actively partecipate in the supply chain.
Nevertheless the top five regions which exceed 1 billion euro in GI chains are Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy, Piedmont and Tuscany. In other words, all northern regions.
In the South and in the islands an overall increase is recorded compared to the previous year equal to +7,5% with important growth especially in Apulia and in Sardinia.
Also in the food sector, certifications are important.
